All women in midlife face the usual physical and mental transitions. However, additional stressors can make life even more challenging — from supporting adult children, dealing with loss or illness, caring for aging parents, or struggling with finances. The messy reality of life can leave us feeling overwhelmed and unsure of how to find happiness in what should be one of the best chapters of our lives.

When I had my 50th birthday, there was light at the end of the tunnel: our three teens would soon be on their own, financial pressures would ease, and it would be smooth sailing towards our retirement years. Ten years later, the reality my husband and I faced was not even close to the life we had imagined. I know all too well that overwhelming sense of sadness and hopelessness that comes with dashed dreams. And when you’re mired in the muck, it’s hard to see the way out.
